CAN I BE HAPPY WITHOUT SUGAR?

In all the years I’ve been trying to clear my skin, the idea that the cause of my acne might be what I’m eating seemed like the most disappointing outcome.

I LOVE FOOD. But in actual fact, I have quite an unhealthy relationship with it. I am a serial comfort eater…more specifically… with SUGAR.

Trapped in another one of life’s vicious cycles, I eat sugar to feel happier about myself. But eating sugar causes more breakouts, making me feel more depressed and in need of a sugary pick me up.

I have spent the last couple of days on a SUGAR DETOX.  Admittedly in the recent weeks leading up to this I have been consuming as much as possible until the detox started!

Now it’s NO MORE CHOCOLATE. NO MORE BISCUITS. NO MORE SODA.

SUGAR ADDICT

Day one and two were the hardest to go without sugar.  Like any addiction, I had headaches and an unsatisfied feeling for most of the day. Something was missing and my body craved for it.

Similarly to giving up alcohol or cigarettes, it needs to be a gradual detox to ensure I do not succumb to its SWEET, SWEET, SUGARY EMBRACE.

To begin with, I have cut out refined sugar with the hope to progress on to avoiding white, refined carbs which once digested turn into glucose.  A lot of people have been asking me if that means I’m cutting fruit out of my diet. The answer is no. Although fruit contains a lot of fructose, it is NATURAL sugar and the fruit provides me with much needed vitamins and antioxidants to nourish and protect our skin.

HAPPY HORMONES

One sure way to unbalance your hormones (which may cause your breakouts) is to eat a lot of refined sugar. This is largely due to the over production in insulin which leads to an increase in testosterone.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I eat chocolate because it makes me feel good. And it’s not just me! Eating chocolate releases endorphins which reduces the levels of stress and pain.

Now I need to get those endorphins from another source as chocolate is no longer an option! If you are trying to cut sugar out of your diet, here are a few HAPPY HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES for you to try.

EXCERCISE

We all know this one right? But it is hard to ever think that doing a BURPEE would make me produce HAPPY HORMONES! Exercise is a sure way to get your head in a positive mind set. Inhale confidence, exhale doubt. You got this.

MUSIC

What’s your ‘happy song’? Sing to the top of your lungs like no one is listening! If your not sure, Fleetwood Mac ‘Everywhere’ is sure to create those positive vibes!

SEX

Ahem.

SPICY FOOD

Your brain recognises heat as pain in the body so sends endorphins in to reduce the stress. It’s time to turn up the HEAT!

LAUGH

A sure way to feel happy. Laughing with others is always more fun so call your friends and tell them you need a good laugh. They will step up to the challenge.

PUT YOUR POSITIVE PANTS ON!

I’m trying to not see this change in my diet as a negative detox, one where I’m missing out on all the foods I love and instead think that I am nourishing my body and eating myself beautiful with every bite.

WOULD YOU change your diet if it meant clearer skin?
